Canal and uranium, what's the difference?
In some ways Gallop has got himself his very own canal in his "not on my watch" stance on uranium mining in WA. Pressure is mounting on him to reconsider, the latest figure to come out in support of major uranium mining is former PM Bob Hawke. However Gallop subbornly maintains that no matter who recommends it, there will be no uranium mining in WA. Sound familiar yet?
Colin Barnett did not get support from John Howard, Peter Costello or even Liberal patriarch Sir Charles Court for his canal plan, and it has been opposed by the CCI and the IPA, yet he refuses to back down. It's hilarious how politicians from both sides of politics end up doing exactly the same thing, but it's even funnier how their own side of the blogoshpere will stand up for them, citing that they are being brave and sticking up for what they believe even if under pressure, while scoffing at the other side as being foolhardy.
Barnett and Gallop are both making stands that could hurt their chances of being elected, the question is, who's will be the more fatal? No matter who you agree with, its quite obvious that making stands even when all around you disagree does not sit well with the public. You'd think they would have realised that by now, but I guess they are in too deep to pull out.
